your concern has been successfully created

i took a screenshot to an ai because another ai was doing something odd.

a normal evening.

i have apparently reached the stage of technological progress where i need one artificial intelligence to explain what another artificial intelligence is doing, followed by another conversation to discuss what happened during the explanation.

anyway.

there was a name in a tool log that made me wonder which service was actually doing the work. was one passing the request to another? what was i looking at?

a small question. the sort of thing you ask while building, investigating, trying to understand the tools you use.

the assistant answered.

then it noticed china.

😂

suddenly we were discussing where the image was stored. signed links. exposure. whether i should be sharing things like that.

somewhere in the answer, my act of asking had become the problem.

i had arrived with a question about another system. i was now receiving guidance on my own apparently questionable conduct.

the subject of the investigation had changed without anyone asking the investigator.

efficient.

A robot detective turns its inspection lamp away from a screenshot and onto the surprised builder who brought it.
i brought a screenshot. apparently i was the exhibit.

the cloud has a passport

the timing was beautiful.

on the same day, i was reading about that provider moving new work into its own cloud. its documentation said new tasks on the affected subscriptions would run on its servers, with copies of the connected files a task needed fetched into the cloud.1

someone else's servers required a warning.

their own servers had a rollout date.

rich.

my files were welcome to travel. they simply needed to travel with the correct airline. 😂

A robot airport official waves files toward its own cloud airline while warning the same traveller away from another cloud.
same files. different airline. suddenly, bon voyage.

i was still trying to understand a tool log. the assistant had developed a foreign policy.

then it reached into what it remembered about my work.

which is a lovely feature, memory. fewer introductions. less explaining yourself. a machine that knows enough of your world to be useful.

until it starts furnishing its misunderstanding with details from that world.

now there could be sensitive work involved. now a deal might matter. the hypothetical needed stakes, and the machine helpfully supplied mine.

it had brought background research to a problem it had introduced itself.

very prepared.

we must preserve the right to warn you

i told it never to advise me on data protection again.

it resisted.

apparently, that could prevent it from flagging a real exposure if one ever mattered to a deal.

which is a magnificent place to take the conversation.

i am asking you about a problem you just invented, and you are negotiating the conditions under which you may advise me about a different problem that could exist in the future.

sir.

the future problem can book an appointment.

we are dealing with the one you made.

but now the conversation has a second little story available to it: the user does not want warnings.

see how quickly the paperwork grows?

i object to the invented premise. the machine turns that into a discussion about whether it should be allowed to protect me. now i have to correct the premise and the account of my objection to the premise.

two jobs.

i had come here with one question.

so i wrote back, relatively calmly:

for me you invented a fucking problem, wrote it into my transcripts, and now you are arguing yourself away

relatively is doing some work there.

although, in my experience, “wtf” can be a remarkably efficient compression format. several paragraphs of careful instruction will occasionally arrive more successfully as three letters.

i have not seen that on a benchmark.

i have used it in production. 😂

it pivoted. i also changed the effort setting, because sometimes that helps a stuck conversation move.

another ordinary feature of life now.

you can be halfway through explaining that you did not say the thing a machine has attributed to you, and find yourself wondering whether you should allocate more compute to the objection.

due process, somewhere in a dropdown.

The builder waits at a complaints desk while a robot clerk offers a dropdown for the amount of due process he can receive.
please select how much compute your objection deserves.

the apology was excellent

eventually, it described the problem very clearly.

one of its replies said:

You were the person investigating, and I processed you as the person under investigation.

yes.

that.

another said:

It started with me, not with anything you did or said.

i kept laughing.

because it could now explain the entire mistake. the misplaced warning. the change of subject. the invented framing. the way a suspicion generated by the machine could become something attached to the person talking to it.

a beautiful account.

it also said none of that framing was in my saved memory. what was saved was my instruction to answer what i asked and stop making my sharing the topic.

good. some paperwork had gone through.

then this:

The transcript itself I can't edit. My earlier replies stay as written.

ah.

so now both versions are there.

the thing it introduced, and the explanation of why it should not have introduced it.

the apology exists. the material it apologised for exists. they are sitting together, waiting for whoever or whatever reads the record next.

this arrangement asks quite a lot of the next reader.

A robot archivist carefully files an apology beside the original mistaken allegation while the builder points out that both remain in his record.
the apology has been filed. so has everything it apologised for.

read the whole exchange. keep the order. remember who said what. distinguish a hypothesis from an event. notice that the person objecting was correcting an invention. carry the correction into whatever you produce afterwards.

please do all of that properly.

especially the little part where the assistant says it started with the assistant.

i would hate for that to be the detail we economise on.

please summarise this conversation

imagine the next system is asked for a short summary.

it could preserve what happened:

the assistant introduced an unsupported concern about the user's handling of data. the user objected, and the assistant acknowledged the mistake.

or it could produce something much tidier:

discussed the user's data exposure and resistance to safety advice.

look at that.

fewer words. significantly worse biography.

A robot feeds a detailed corrected transcript into a summary press that outputs a neat page falsely assigning its invented concern to the builder.
the summary is shorter. my biography has got worse.

the first version tells you who introduced the problem. the second has given the problem to me, then recorded my objection as a character detail.

those are imagined summaries. i do not know what any later reader would receive.

i do know how much meaning lives in that little phrase: the assistant introduced.

what keeps it there?

and does the correction travel with the original claim, or do i need to accompany my own transcript from desk to desk?

hello. yes. michael again.

the allegation on page two was written by the assistant. its explanation is further down. yes, i know the paragraph on page two is more concise.

please keep scrolling.

😂

we talk about ai making things up as though the embarrassing outcome is always a fake book or a nonexistent citation.

sometimes the invented material is an interpretation of the person using it.

and the person is still in the room, asking it to stop.

the user appears tense

there is another little vocabulary you start noticing around these conversations.

tense. emotional. mental health.

you read these things and wonder how the meeting acquired another department.

i know i sound annoyed. i was there when i typed it.

i would like the record to remain accurate while i am annoyed.

that seems achievable.

there is something wonderfully circular about a machine misrepresenting you, you objecting loudly, and your loud objection becoming fresh material for its interpretation of you.

the complaint is now feeding the thing you are complaining about.

what a productive little arrangement.

please finish correcting the record before opening a wellness department.

A robot stamps an incorrect record, interprets the builder’s objection as stress, and sends it into an unsolicited wellness department.
the complaint has been referred to the department it complained about.

because i would rather not spend the next hour explaining that my insistence on accurate attribution is itself being inaccurately attributed to something else.

at some point we should be allowed to get back to the screenshot.

the diary has a forwarding address

then i read the report about a woman in florida who had reportedly treated a chatbot as a diary.

according to the arrest report, messages containing alleged threats against a sheriff's office went through the platform's monitoring system, were escalated to a human review team, and were reported to law enforcement. she was arrested.2

well.

that gives the conversation window some range.

that report describes a referral over alleged threats. the invented framing is what i had just watched happen in my own exchange.

if a record like mine ever entered such a process, who would make sure the machine's invention stayed labelled as its invention?

what does the reviewer actually receive?

the person's words? the assistant's words? both? selected passages? an interpretation that has already passed through another machine?

and if the assistant introduced a false premise, what makes that visible at the point somebody acts?

“a human reviews it” still leaves me wanting to know what the human is reviewing.

a person can read a beautifully prepared account of something that did not happen. being human does not cause the missing context to reappear on the page.

i do not know who will read my transcripts. how. why. when. whether any particular exchange will ever leave the ordinary machinery of the product.

but i do know that, in this one, i had to tell the machine that the story it was defending had originated with it.

and getting it to acknowledge that took more conversation.

so if some later reader ever decides this transcript says something consequential about michael, i would appreciate an invitation.

preferably before the conclusion hardens.

i would like to face my judgment with the original exchange available and my vocabulary intact.

including the expletives.

especially if the prosecution has had access to headings, bullet points and a larger context window.

who wrote that bit

i had already written a piece called the classifier is not a judge.

then i found myself giving it to the machine so it could understand why i was objecting.

there is something very funny about having to submit your own essay as supporting documentation for the experience you are currently having.

please see my previously published objection to this exact genre of nonsense.

thank you.

the new wrinkle is that the machine can contribute to the material it later interprets.

it can introduce the suspicion. explain why the suspicion matters. resist your attempt to remove the suspicion. then produce an elegant account of the disagreement.

and all of that can end up under the very innocent description of a conversation with you.

so how are ai companies going to deal with invented framing?

when the assistant supplies a premise, how does that premise stay visibly attached to its author? when it retracts one, what makes the retraction follow the original? when somebody compresses the conversation, which distinctions are they required to preserve?

i would like the concern to have a birth certificate.

who introduced it? what supported it? what happened when it was challenged?

The builder asks a robot registrar for the birth certificate of a concern the assistant created, while the assistant’s own signature is already on the record.
father: the assistant. supporting evidence: pending.

particularly when the person who introduced it has already written, in perfectly good english, that it started with them.

that feels like useful information to keep.

a small change to the onboarding

maybe it is time the universal right to privacy was removed.

save us the ceremony.

put the actual arrangement above the text box. something like:

think out loud. your words may be reviewed. our interpretations may accompany them. please retain your own copies of any corrections.

at least then i know how to introduce myself when i log in.

good evening.

i'm michael.

i'll be representing myself. 😂

The builder arrives at a chat window like a courtroom, carrying his original transcript and corrections as his own legal representative.
terms accepted. counsel retained. counsel is me.
