Five Questions, 4 October

| 4 Oct 2026

Six questions would have been greedy. Answers below carry Saturday's prints.

Why did diesel fall eight per cent on a day crude barely moved?

ULSD settled at 4.501 USD per gallon, down from 4.898, a drop of 8.1% and roughly 1,409 USD per tonne. Brent over the same session gave up 0.3% to 102.25 USD a barrel, and RBOB gasoline went the other way, up 1.0% to 3.3124 USD per gallon. A distillate crack that compresses this hard while the barrel holds above 100 dollars is a product-side event: refinery runs, a cargo programme, or a positioning unwind rather than anything happening to crude supply. Anyone pricing gasoil into East or West Africa on a formula struck last week is carrying a mark that is now a long way from the screen.

What is actually behind an 11.7% day in sugar?

Raw sugar #11 jumped to 19.91 US cents a pound from 17.82, around 439 USD per tonne, the largest single-session move on the panel. The trade's own reading is that the rally was built on weather-related supply fear and that the next leg depends on production-loss data coming out of Brazil and India. Fear priced at two cents a pound is a fragile structure: it holds only if the cane and crush numbers confirm it.

Does Kenya have a plan that matches the price?

It has a dam. The government intends to expand cane at the Galana-Kulalu irrigation scheme, with the National Infrastructure Fund expected to finance the water works. Galana-Kulalu has absorbed capital before and produced mostly press releases, so the metric that matters is the first irrigated hectare under cane, not the groundbreaking.

Who is paying for Ebola 17 in the DRC?

Kinshasa reports 227 million US dollars mobilised for the first response plan against the MVE17 outbreak. For anyone moving cargo through Congolese road and river corridors, the operational tell is where the screening points go: health checkpoints on trucking routes cost days, and days cost demurrage.

What broke in Bahrain?

The 2026 Formula 1 regulations, in rain. Cars sat in garages and the pit lane for over an hour because the new power units could not cope with standing water, and the formation lap produced chaos before anything resembling a race happened. Lewis Hamilton, down in eighteenth at one point, finished on the podium in third. Ferrari started Charles Leclerc on softs in those conditions, declined his request for intermediates, and watched him fall to twenty-second. A regulatory package that turns a wet track into a shutdown is now a political problem for the FIA rather than an engineering one.

And the tool that got quietly shipped?

Cloudflare put its unified CLI into beta, folding Workers, DNS and security management into one command surface explicitly pitched at coding agents. The interesting part is the consolidation: three consoles collapsing into one scriptable interface is how infrastructure becomes something an agent can operate unattended.

Asked and not answered. Chilean analysts are modelling what simultaneous stoppages at Escondida and Centinela would do to national output; COMEX copper meanwhile added 0.1% to 6.549 USD a pound, about 14,438 USD per tonne. Wheat eased 1.4% to 683 US cents a bushel, 251 USD per tonne. Urea at 446.5 and DAP at 802.5 USD per tonne were unchanged on the day, as was cobalt at 39,140 and the Baltic Dry at 3,148. Potash had no published print, free sources being down. In Zambia, opposition figure Brian Mundubile and his running mate were taken to Solwezi, in the North-Western copper province, to enter pleas on sedition charges.
