The Dateline Run, 5 October

| 5 Oct 2026

Potash moves a long way today: one cargo into Louisiana, one orebody in Gabon, both aimed at the same sanctioned supply gap. Everything else is datelined below.

NEW ORLEANS

The first 30,000 t of Belarusian potash in four years is due to discharge here this month, the sanctions imposed on Minsk in 2021 having been lifted. Canada still supplies close to 80% of US fertilizer imports and Washington says it will keep buying Canadian tonnes while it builds the Belarusian channel. For buyers outside North America the question is the one that always follows a reopened origin: how much Belarusian product stops competing in Brazil, India and West Africa once the Gulf discharge berths start taking it.

LIBREVILLE

Millennial Potash now targets 2029 production at its US-backed Gabonese project, with the chief executive framing the pitch bluntly: the tonnes are meant to displace Russian potash rather than Canadian. First African potash of scale would land roughly 2,000 nautical miles closer to Lagos and Abidjan than anything coming off the Baltic.

KOLHAPUR

Sugar mill workers from across Maharashtra demonstrated outside the district collectorate on Monday and warned of an indefinite strike from 22 October over labour law changes, wages and employment terms. It arrives in a season already short of cane: Solapur district acreage is down 12.5% on last year after drought. Raw sugar closed at 20.78 US cents/lb, 17.9% above the prior print.

NEW YORK HARBOUR

The products complex fell harder than the crude it comes from. ULSD settled at 4.5238 USD/gal, down 8.7% on the day, equivalent to 1,416 USD/t. RBOB lost 5.9% to 3.2343 USD/gal. Brent gave up 3.4% to 100.06 USD/bbl, so the distillate crack did most of the damage on its own. Cargo buyers for East African discharge who have been waiting out a strong gasoil market finally have something to bid into.

LUSAKA

The Bank of Zambia has collected 1.3 billion yuan, about 191 million dollars, in mining taxes since the yuan-denominated payment system for Chinese miners launched in October 2025. The same briefing confirmed 514 million dollars of foreign reserves went into the government's bond buyback. A central bank taking copper revenue in renminbi and spending dollars on its own paper is a currency-mix story worth watching in the kwacha.

KINSHASA

The Congolese Treasury has set an auction for 13 October seeking 50 billion Congolese francs in Treasury bills, part of a broader plan to raise 60 million dollars on the domestic public securities market. Domestic funding at this tempo tends to show up later in payment terms for mining services and fuel import credit lines in Lubumbashi.

ABUJA

Nigeria expects lower wheat, rice and corn output this season, blamed on higher input costs and reduced incentives, which points the millers back to imports. CBOT wheat helped nobody, settling at 691.5 cents/bu, up 2.3%, or 254 USD/t.

NAIROBI

Kenyan banks and Saccos are preparing to let customers send money using mobile phone numbers instead of account numbers under a new PesaLink arrangement, bringing bank rails closer to the M-Pesa experience. Trade finance it is not, yet counterparty payment friction in East Africa has always been a settlement cost in disguise.
